In any political system, power is a valued resource. In Italy, where the story takes place, the vast majority of power is controlled by one powerful family. With their wealth and influence comes a lack of accountability and scrutiny over how they wield these powers. One of their most significant tools in furthering their own interests is the secret police – an elite group that spies on citizens and stifles dissent among its own populace with violence if necessary. This type of thing has become so commonplace in Italy that it's normal to live day-to-day without wondering what's going on behind closed doors. In 1762, when the secret police were created, a group of powerful nobles wanted a way to keep a close eye on their own citizens. Thus they hired a man named Luciano to build them a way to do just that. Luciano was a callous and unscrupulous man who had little regard for human life or property, and he used his abilities to create such an apparatus for his superiors. Pleased with the results, they began using this new machine for all sorts of reasons: Uncovering their enemies' deepest secrets; blackmailing them; using it as an excuse to arrest and execute political dissidents; and even using it as the perfect tool to seize more power and assert more control over Italy. The machine was called the Opera Fatal, and it was able to spy on anyone in the state. As long as they were near its reach, it could spy on them. The Opera's reach expanded incredibly fast, and it soon spanned all over Italy. It was this machine that allowed the Italian government to successfully dispose of powerful noble families that stood in their way, and it made the entire country into a puppet state that existed only for their benefit. But even though this system worked incredibly well for many years, they eventually hit a snag: The old nobles were gone, but so were their replacements. The new nobles, meanwhile, were too weak to control the machine. The control over the country soon became even more precarious when a new secret police formed by aristocrats formed their own run on the machine for their own personal gains. The new government wanted nothing to do with this new regime, but they couldn't stop it without bloodshed. As a result, they developed their own secret police force of their own – one which claimed to be just as powerful as the Opera's previous iterations. Once again, the old secret police tried to come back into power and reclaim what was theirs, but they failed to do so because they were not nearly as mighty as the current regime's secret police force. The new secret police eventually became a power player in the ruling body of their country, and they took over where the last ones left off. As a result, the Opera became a stream of information instead of an actual network. This created a very dangerous problem. The public was served by information from both sources, and this made it easy for them to stay one step ahead of those who wanted to control them. In fact, there's still at least one person who knows all the lines that run through this machine, but he has yet to tell anybody what his role is within it – even those who've been operating it for the past 100 years. cfa1e77820
